That said, there's still considerable ground to cover if Wero is to establish itself as a payment method in retail – specifically in e-commerce. Research by Handelsblatt, picked up by Händlerbund News in late April, arrived at the sobering finding that none of Germany's ten largest online retailers had integrated Wero so far. According to the report, Otto, Ikea, and Zalando have been reviewing the option for more than five months without reaching a decision. Oddly enough, EPI already announced back in November 2025 that Rossmann would integrate Wero into its online shop – the drugstore chain itself has since denied this, saying the integration is merely under review.
Rewe, according to the report, has currently ruled out an integration altogether, citing the service's still-limited brand recognition. Apple and Shein reportedly did not respond to the inquiry. Amazon requires some nuance: for customers with a Dutch bank account, Amazon.de offers the iDEAL payment system, which is currently being gradually migrated to Wero. That doesn't apply to German customers without a Dutch account – for them, a separate Wero integration would be needed, something Amazon has not yet commented on.
Figures from a survey by the retail research institute EHI, cited in the report, reinforce this picture: roughly three-quarters of retailers surveyed are taking a wait-and-see approach. Industry association HDE, per the same report, sees genuine interest but stresses that Wero still needs to prove itself.
